Senator Leila De Lima on Friday said she was hoping that Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton wins the United States presidential race, saying the world "cannot afford another misogynistic global leader," in reference to Republican nominee Donald Trump.
De Lima made the pronouncement in a women’s rights forum in Quezon City.
“Sana po. Sana. It’s gonna be Hillary,” De Lima said when asked about her opinion on the two US presidential candidates.
“We cannot afford another misogynistic global leader, a dangerous global leader,” De Lima added, in apparent reference to President Rodrigo Duterte.
De Lima has been the most ardent critic of Duterte, leading a probe into the rising death toll in the administration's war on drugs. She has also accused Duterte of misogyny for supposedly "slut-shaming" her with revelations about her personal life.
International outlets had previously drawn comparisons between Duterte and Trump with John Oliver, in his American satire program “Last Week Tonight,” branding the Philippine president the “Trump of the East.”
Duterte has previously rejected the comparisons.
Results of recent opinion polls show that Clinton has been leading Trump in the presidential race.
De Lima said Duterte needs to respect whoever wins in the US polls in November.
“Sana ang ating pangulo, bigyan ng respeto ang susunod na US president,” the senator said.
